Clemson University Wordmark

From left, F. Curtis Michel, Ian Duck, Donald Clayton, and Alex Dessler on June 2, 1989. This farewell party sent Clayton at age 54 on his departure to Clemson University. Michel, Clayton and Duck were graduate students in physics at Caltech during 1956-61, and came to Rice University almost simultaneously in 1963. They were also frequent tennis partners for 35 years. Dessler, a Caltech undergraduate, was first Chair of Rice's new Department of Space Physics and Astronomy in 1963, a department in which Michel and Clayton were among the four founding members.
