Bernard Pagel and Donald Clayton in June 1968 before the home (then) of the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceaux Castle, Sussex. This day began a three-decade friendship between these two centered on issues of nucleosynthesis and the abundance evolution of the galaxy. The RGO would remain in the Sussex castle for only a few more years.
