W. Michael Howard and Donald Clayton in Mike Howard’s Livermore home on October 30, 1981 . Mike Howard did his Ph. D. thesis with Clayton at Rice University during 1970-73. Mike had been an undergraduate at Baylor University in Waco TX . He accompanied Clayton several times to Cambridge for research at Hoyle’s institute and became a fixture of the “Rice mafia” in Cambridge . Howard’s work included studies of explosive He burning in supernova shells and the origin of rare nuclei from seed nuclei in that process (ApJ 1971).
