It was here in Rice Stadium in 1961 that President John F. Kennedy delivered his public address with the challenge to put a man on the moon. Clayton was a founding member of this department in 1963. The Space Science Laboratory was built in 1966. The years 1967-77 were "golden years" for nuclear astrophysics at Rice.
