Donald Clayton and Philip A. Seeger beside the Guildhall on the Cambridge market place during the Conference THE NEUTRON AND ITS APPLICATIONS, which was held in Cambridge to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Chadwick's discovery of the neutron there. Clayton's paper "The Neutron and the Universe" was presented on this occasion Sept 15, 1982. Seeger and Clayton were friends from graduate school at Caltech in the 1960s. Their 1965 paper with Fowler (ApJ Suppl, 11, 121-166 (1965)) presented the first dynamical formulation of the r process of rapid neutron capture, which guided all subsequent work on the r process. That paper also contained the first evaluations of an exponential distribution of neutron fluxes in the s process.
